Hauppauge, NY - Suffolk OTB took in over $2.5 million in wagers on the Kentucky Derby last Saturday. The May 6th running of the 132nd Run for the Roses was the second largest Derby Day in the corporation’s history.
Suffolk OTB’s handle for Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, where Barbaro maintained his undefeated record and emerged as a strong contender to be the first Triple Crown in 28 years, was $2,542,815.
“We’ve worked hard to provide excellent service for our customers, and to make improvements wherever we can, both in our branches and with our telephone wagering,” said Suffolk OTB President/CEO Jeffrey A. Casale. “The biggest winners on Derby Day were the taxpayers of Suffolk County.”
The Racing Forum, Suffolk OTB’s premier racing parlor, had a handle of $538,330, an increase of $16,000 over last year. Tel-a-bet, where racing enthusiasts wager from their homes by telephone, saw over $277,483. Customers can open a telephone account with Suffolk OTB by calling 1-800-TEL-BETS, or can download an application.
“With Barbaro emerging as the clear favorite for the Preakness Stakes on May 20, Suffolk racing enthusiasts will have the opportunity to be a part of the first Triple Crown winner in a generation at any of our 14 branches or six restaurant Qwik-Bet locations,” said Suffolk OTB Vice President Marietta M. Seaman.
Suffolk Regional OTB was founded in 1975 as a public benefit corporation to generate revenue for local government, curb illegal bookmaking, and insure the well being of the horse racing industry. Last year, Suffolk OTB generated $9.8 million for taxpayers in New York State and Suffolk County.
Suffolk OTB operates 14 branch locations, and Qwik Bet wagering at six locations. For information on a branch location near you, call Suffolk OTB at 853-1000. |
